When Every Second Matters: Investing in Lifesaving Technology at Holton Community Hospital
By Michael Hamilton, PA | Holton Community Hospital
Modern defibrillator technology supports high-quality CPR and ememergency cardiovascular care. Learn why the HCH Foundation is raising funds to equip our Emergency Department with two new ZOLL R Series defibrillator/monitors.

In the Emergency Department, we prepare every day for situations we hope never happen. A patient experiencing sudden cardiac arrest is one of those situations. In an instant, a routine day can become a fight for someone’s life. When that happens, there is no time to search for equipment or wonder whether the technology available to us can meet the needs of the moment. Our team needs to be ready—and the equipment beside us needs to be ready, too. That is why the HCH Foundation’s effort to purchase two new ZOLL R Series defibrillator/monitors for the Holton Community Hospital Emergency Department is so important.
Why are defibrillators important in rural emergency care?
Defibrillators help healthcare professionals treat certain life-threatening heart rhythms during cardiac arrest. At rural hospitals such as Holton Community Hospital, advanced defibrillator/monitors also support CPR, cardiac monitoring and coordinated emergency treatment. Having modern equipment available helps clinical teams prepare to provide critical care close to home.
Providing Critical Emergency Care Close to Home
As a nonprofit Critical Access Hospital and Level IV Trauma Center, Holton Community Hospital (HCH) plays an essential role in providing emergency care close to home.
In rural Kansas, our Emergency Department may be the first place a critically ill or injured patient receives advanced care. Our job is to rapidly assess the patient, begin treatment, stabilize them and determine the next appropriate level of care.
When cardiac arrest occurs, high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and prompt defibrillation, when indicated, are critical components of resuscitation.
The American Heart Association identifies early, high-quality CPR and prompt defibrillation as key interventions associated with improved outcomes in adult cardiac arrest.
For our clinical team, having modern equipment that supports those efforts is an important part of preparing for an already complex emergency.
Why Are Defibrillators Important During Cardiac Arrest?
A defibrillator is a medical device that delivers an electrical shock to the heart when a patient has certain life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms.
During cardiac arrest, the heart may develop a rhythm that prevents it from pumping blood effectively. When a shock-able rhythm, such as ventricular fibrillation or pulse less ventricular tachycardia, is present, prompt defibrillation is a critical part of treatment.
However, not every cardiac arrest requires a shock. High-quality CPR remains essential, helping circulate blood while the medical team identifies the patient’s heart rhythm and provides appropriate treatment.
Modern hospital defibrillator/monitors support these efforts by combining electrical therapy, cardiac monitoring and technology that assists clinicians during resuscitation.
For our Emergency Department, these capabilities are especially important when every second matters.
How Will the ZOLL R Series Improve Our Emergency Equipment?
The ZOLL R Series represents a significant upgrade from our aging defibrillator equipment.
In addition to delivering defibrillation and supporting advanced cardiac care, these devices provide technology designed to assist our clinical team throughout a resuscitation.
Real-time CPR feedback
The ZOLL R Series includes Real CPR Help® technology, which provides real-time feedback on chest-compression rate and depth.
During CPR, maintaining appropriate compression quality is essential. This feedback helps clinicians assess their performance and make adjustments while caring for the patient.
Advanced cardiac rhythm monitoring
The R Series also offers See-Thru CPR® technology, which helps reduce interference caused by chest compression so clinicians can better view the patient’s underlying heart rhythm.
This technology can help reduce unnecessary interruptions in CPR, although clinicians must still pause compression when necessary to confirm the rhythm and make treatment decisions.
Equipment readiness
The R Series platform incorporates automated readiness checks designed to help staff identify equipment issues before an emergency occurs.
These capabilities support our team’s preparation, helping ensure that essential equipment is maintained and ready for use.
Together, these features provide additional tools to support high-quality CPR, cardiac monitoring and coordinated emergency care.
Supporting the Team Behind Every Emergency Response
A cardiac arrest is not a one-person response. It is a coordinated team effort.
Nurses, providers and other members of the Emergency Department work together simultaneously—performing compression, managing the airway, administering medications, monitoring cardiac rhythms, preparing for defibrillation and making critical decisions as the patient’s condition changes.
Technology should support that teamwork, not complicate it.
Modern defibrillator/monitors help our clinical team carry out these responsibilities by providing essential information and treatment capabilities in one device.
For a rural hospital, investing in this level of emergency equipment also means investing in our ability to care for our neighbors right here at home.
We may not have all of the resources of a large metropolitan medical center, but when an emergency arrives at our doors, our patients deserve a team equipped to respond with skill, confidence and current technology.
A Community Investment in Emergency Readiness
That is where the HCH Foundation—and our community—can make a tremendous difference.
The Foundation’s annual gala will help raise funds for two new ZOLL R Series defibrillator/monitors for our Emergency Department.
These are not simply new pieces of equipment. They are tools our physicians, advanced practice providers and nurses will rely upon during some of the most critical moments our patients and their families will ever face.
You never know whose life may depend on the equipment in an emergency room.
It could be a neighbor. A coworker. A parent. A child. A friend.
And when that moment comes, we want to be ready.
Supporting the HCH Foundation means helping ensure that lifesaving emergency care remains available, equipped and prepared for the people of our rural communities—when every second matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a defibrillator, and how does it work?
A defibrillator is a medical device that delivers a controlled electrical shock to the heart when certain life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms are present. Defibrillation can help restore an organized heart rhythm in patients with shock-able rhythms, such as ventricular fibrillation or pulse less ventricular tachycardia.
Does every patient in cardiac arrest need defibrillation?
No. Defibrillation is used for specific shock-able heart rhythms. Other cardiac arrest rhythms require different treatment approaches. High-quality CPR is essential during cardiac arrest, and the medical team determines the appropriate treatment based on the patient’s condition and heart rhythm.
What is the ZOLL R Series defibrillator?
The ZOLL R Series is a hospital-grade defibrillator/monitor designed to support resuscitation and advanced cardiac care. Its capabilities include defibrillation, cardiac monitoring and real-time CPR feedback.
How does real-time CPR feedback help healthcare professionals?
Real-time CPR feedback provides information about the rate and depth of chest compression. This helps healthcare professionals assess compression quality and make adjustments during resuscitation.
Why is this equipment important for a rural hospital?
Rural hospitals provide essential emergency care for patients who may be far from larger medical centers. Advanced resuscitation equipment supports the medical team as it assesses, treats and stabilizes patients and determines whether additional care or transfer is necessary.
How can I support the HCH Foundation’s defibrillator campaign?
The HCH Foundation is raising funds through its annual gala to help purchase two new ZOLL R Series defibrillator/monitors for the Holton Community Hospital Emergency Department.
